Godello from the Valdeorras region of Spain. 1/5th the absolute level of intensity and concentration as the previously-tasted Charles Shaw Chardonnay, but 5x the complexity. Subtle stuff, but there’s quite a bit going on. Nothing at all on the front palate – could be water – but lots of slightly tart and bitter nuttiness around the sides and back. The finish is extended and unusual…creamy? This is a fairly unusual wine, and I think I like it somewhat. I also think I’m glad I’m not drinking it with most foods, because I can’t see it standing up to distracting food elements. Though I expect the bitterness would be very good with foods…maybe I’m wrong. It’s not overwhelming, which is good, but it’s also not quite interesting enough, which is bad. ($14)
