TN: Weingut Pfaffl 2002 Grüner Veltliner “Goldjoch”

If I hadn’t looked at the label before tasting this wine, I’m not sure I would have been able to guess what it was. Smells like barrel. Tastes a bit like some of the heavily oaked Cal-Rhone whites I’ve had, nutty heavy verging-on-tropical fruit buried under wood. There is just a hint of Grüner grape [...]

TN: Weinberghof Fritsch 2002 Grüner Veltliner Schlossberg

Rich, ripe, and a bit coarse (mainly in the sense of evident alcohol). Some smoke in the nose, some sweet but slightly oxidized fruit, and then some pleasant stoney acid on to that peculiar Grüner finish. Not my everyday wine, but I’m enjoying it. And it’s being closed out at some ridiculously low price. ($7?)

TN: A couple Grüners

Weingut Türk 2004 Grüner Veltliner Vom Urgsten: I have no memory of this wine, save that it was Grüner. Weingut Jäger 2003 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Ried Klaus: A friendly, companionable, and pleasant wine. A wine that goes down easily. A wine with balance and ease and not showing much harm from the crazy vintage.

TN: Türk 2003 Grüner Veltliner “Vom Urgestein”

Light apple-ish nose. Starts out tart and slightly spritzy, goes numb briefly on the mid-palate, and finishes long, spicy, and slightly volatile. I end up feeling it in my nasal passages a bit. Quite pleasant, food-friendly, not extraordinary. Well worth $7.
